Learnerships in South Africa
Learnerships are a uniquely South African opportunity that allows you to earn a nationally recognised qualification while gaining practical workplace experience and receiving a monthly stipend. Registered with the relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), learnerships combine structured classroom learning with on-the-job training over a period of 12 to 24 months.
What makes learnerships particularly valuable is that they result in an NQF-aligned qualification that is recognised across the country. This means the skills and certification you earn are portable and valued by employers in your industry. Companies invest in learnerships partly because they contribute to their B-BBEE scorecard, which means employers are genuinely motivated to support your development and success.
Learnerships are available across virtually every industry in South Africa, from banking and insurance to mining, healthcare, and information technology. Many require only a matric certificate to apply, making them accessible to a wide range of candidates. When applying, emphasise your commitment to completing the full programme, as employers want to invest in candidates who will see it through to qualification.

How to Apply for Learnerships in South Africa
-
1
Ensure you meet the basic requirements: South African citizenship, a valid ID, and at least a matric certificate are standard prerequisites for most learnerships.
-
2
Check that you are not currently registered on another learnership or employed full-time, as SETA regulations typically require learners to be unemployed youth.
-
3
Prepare certified copies of your documents well in advance — ID, matric certificate, and any additional qualifications you hold.
-
4
Be committed to the full programme duration. Employers and SETAs invest significantly in learners and prioritise candidates who will complete the qualification.
-
5
Look for learnerships in industries that align with your career interests, as the qualification you earn will be specific to that sector.
