Successful candidates will assist the Train Driver in the safe handling of different types of trains and locomotive consists, including:
The goal is to ensure freight and cargo reach destinations safely, on time, and without damage.
Sign on duty at designated workplace
Determine which locomotive must be prepared
Obtain and place equipment on locomotive
Check and supplement prescribed equipment
Assist with locomotive start-up procedures
Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters
Check functionality of communication equipment
Attach/detach vehicles according to works order
Mount telemeters where necessary
Complete vehicle list and vacuum forms
Perform brake tests with Train Driver
Perform shunting activities as per directives
Place and remove trucks at sidings
Assist Train Driver during the journey
Compare signal positions verbally
Complete Train Journal after every shift
Submit documentation to Section Manager
Ensure accurate salary processing

Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science
Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental and physical fitness will be tested)
Psychomotor ability (assessed through Vienna Testing System – VTS standards)
Willingness to undergo medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments
Willingness to complete theoretical and practical training successfully
Must obtain Train Assistant certification to work independently
Candidates must successfully complete theoretical and practical assessments.
Regular medical and behavioural assessments will be conducted every 12 months.
