The Department of Tourism has invited eligible chefs from KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape to apply for the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) Programme. The initiative aims to help experienced chefs gain an accredited qualification by recognising their existing knowledge and workplace experience.
If you’ve spent years working in professional kitchens but have never had the opportunity to earn a formal chef qualification, this programme could be the next step in your career.
The Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) Programme is designed to recognise the practical skills and industry experience of chefs who have learned on the job rather than through formal education.
Successful candidates will work towards obtaining the Chef Occupational Qualification (SAQA ID 101697). Upon successful completion, graduates will receive a Chef Occupational Certificate aligned to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 5.
One of the biggest advantages of the programme is that the Department of Tourism covers 100% of the tuition fees and study materials. Participants, however, will be responsible for their own transport and accommodation whenever required.
South Africa’s hospitality industry depends on highly skilled professionals. Many chefs have developed exceptional culinary abilities through years of hands-on experience but remain disadvantaged because they lack formal qualifications.

To qualify for the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) Programme, applicants must meet the following admission requirements:
Have completed Grade 10 or Standard 8
Have at least three years of industry experience working as a chef in a brigade kitchen
Be able to read and write English
Indicate whether they are applying in KwaZulu-Natal or the Western Cape
Be available to attend training sessions at the designated trade centre within their province
