Dis-Chem Pharmacies has a permanent opportunity available for a Security Guard in Polokwane, Limpopo.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates with experience in the retail security environment who can help protect company assets, property, employees and customers while maintaining a safe and secure environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying suspicious activities, monitoring access, conducting patrols, responding to incidents and ensuring that security procedures are followed.

The Security Guard will render security services in line with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, as amended, and Dis-Chem’s security requirements.

The role focuses on protecting assets, property and staff by creating a safe environment, identifying possible criminal activity or disorder, investigating disturbances and responding appropriately while following relevant legislation and company procedures.

Grade 12, Matric or a Senior Certificate

Grade C accreditation with PSIRA

At least 3 years of general exposure in the retail industry, including environments such as shopping malls or warehouses

The following will be an advantage:

At least 1 year of previous experience in a similar security role

The successful candidate will be expected to perform a range of security duties, including:

Remaining vigilant and alert to identify suspicious activities

Conducting regular random patrols of the premises

Monitoring and controlling access to the premises

Regulating vehicle and pedestrian access and allowing entry only to authorised individuals

Investigating and reporting signs of damage or unlawful entry

Maintaining a visible security presence to deter criminal activity

Helping prevent theft, damage, personal injury and other unlawful acts

Providing professional and friendly assistance to customers, guests and employees

Conducting access control procedures, including searches of staff, suppliers and company merchandisers

Maintaining and completing security registers and occurrence books

Cancelling staff purchases and checking declared goods

Supervising and checking refuse removal according to company standards

Protecting the company’s property and assets from theft, dishonesty and malicious behaviour

Remaining at the assigned post while on duty

Maintaining good customer service relationships

Reporting unusual or suspicious behaviour by staff, customers or suppliers

Being present, observant and vigilant during opening and closing procedures

Ensuring doors and windows are properly locked

Ensuring water taps are turned off where applicable

Conducting personnel frisking and searches

Carrying out thorough vehicle searches

Reporting suspicious incidents to management verbally and in writing

Contacting police and emergency authorities when required

Monitoring the premises during and after incidents or crisis situations

Preparing detailed reports following security incidents

Monitoring alarm systems and video surveillance equipment

Operating emergency or detection equipment when required

Conducting surveillance and patrols when working at night or alone

Providing assistance during emergencies and alerting relevant first responders

Maintaining order during evacuations and at assembly points

Providing security advice, safety warnings and tips

Responding quickly and appropriately during crisis situations

Taking accurate notes of unusual occurrences and daily activities

Enforcing rules and regulations to help prevent criminal activity

Receiving phone calls and responding to messages and other departmental requirements

Knowledge of PSIRA requirements

Fire emergency training and relevant health and safety training or exposure

Good English reading, writing and speaking skills

Ability to speak a third language

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

Hold Grade C PSIRA accreditation

Have clear MIE, criminal and credit records

Have a driver’s licence, own reliable transport and a PDP when deployed as a driver

Entry Requirements

A matric certificate or relevant post-school qualification and South African citizenship or valid work authorisation. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, basic computer literacy, and the ability to work well in a professional team.
