Gallagher Foundation Scholarship
Gallagher Foundation Scholarship 2027: Fully Funded at UCT, Closes 31 July
Role Overview
The Gallagher Foundation is inviting South African matriculants to apply for its full scholarship for the 2027 academic year at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The scholarship covers tuition, books, accommodation, meals, transport and a living allowance for a full undergraduate degree in any field. Learners from households earning R600,000 or less per year qualify, and applications close on 31 July 2026 at 11:59 pm.
The Gallagher Foundation was founded in 2001 by Ellen and Jerry Gallagher to fund university scholarships for young leaders in three countries: South Africa, Mexico and Turkey. The first scholarships were awarded in South Africa in 2002, followed by Mexico in 2004 and Turkey in 2005. South African recipients study at the University of Cape Town, while international recipients study at ITESM Monterrey Campus in Mexico and Bogazici University in Turkey.
The purpose of the scholarship is to back young people who the Foundation believes will positively impact their developing country by bringing peace and prosperity. That means selection looks beyond marks: leadership, ethics and commitment to South Africa’s future weigh heavily. For a learner from a financially disadvantaged background, this is one of the most comprehensive funding packages available at any South African university.

The closing date for the Gallagher Foundation Scholarship 2027 is 31 July 2026 at 11:59 pm. No late applications will be accepted.
University fees remain out of reach for most South African households, and even NSFAS-funded students often struggle with accommodation, food and transport costs that funding does not fully cover. A full scholarship that includes meals, transport and a living allowance removes those barriers completely, allowing a student to focus on their degree.
The Gallagher Foundation also invests in its scholars as future leaders, and its alumni join a network across three continents. For a matriculant from a working-class family with strong marks and leadership qualities, this application could change the direction of an entire family’s future. The essay-based application also gives learners a fair chance to show character, not just marks.
The four short essays are an important part of the selection process, so take time to plan and write thoughtful responses. Be honest, write in your own voice, and support your answers with specific examples from your school or community rather than trying to sound overly impressive. Before submitting, ask a teacher or trusted mentor to proofread your essays for grammar and clarity.
Your essays will cover the following topics:
A failure you experienced and what you learned from it.
Your vision for South Africa over the next 50 years and the role you hope to play.
A leader who has inspired you and why.
The biggest challenges you have faced and how you are overcoming them.
For your recommendation letter, choose someone who knows you well, such as a teacher, coach, or school counsellor. Give them at least one week to prepare a strong, detailed reference.
Yes. You can apply while your UCT application is pending, but final selection depends on your acceptance to UCT, and proof of conditional acceptance forms part of you
