Avoid Job Scams: Safety Tips for South African Job Seekers

Desperation can make us vulnerable. Scammers prey on job seekers by promising high salaries for little work. At StarterJobs, your safety is our priority. Here is how to spot and avoid scams.

Red Flag #1: They Ask for Money

Never pay to get a job. Legitimate employers will never ask for "admin fees," "uniform deposits," or "training costs" upfront. If they ask for money, walk away.

Red Flag #2: Use of Free Email Addresses

Be wary of emails from random accounts like recruitment-company@gmail.com or jobs2026@yahoo.com. Professional companies use their own domain names (e.g., careers@company.co.za).

Red Flag #3: Too Good to Be True

If a job offers R25,000 month for "2 hours of work a day" with "no experience needed," it is a scam. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Red Flag #4: Instant Job Offers

Real companies interview candidates. If you receive a job offer without ever speaking to a human or having an interview, be extremely suspicious.

How to Verify a Company

  • Google the company name + "scam" or "reviews".
  • Check if they have a professional website and LinkedIn profile.
  • Call their official landline number (not the mobile number in the ad) to confirm the vacancy.

Stay safe and trust your gut.
